If a tree falls in a forest

"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it,
does it make a sound?"

I'm sorry I just cant help it. Yesterday I was reminded of this question that is either deep, or shallow, depending on how much you think about it. Perhaps I have spent too many miles behind the wheel of my car since then, but I just can't get this out of my mind !!!

YES, on the surface logic tells me of course it makes a sound. Then as I consider it more, sound is defined as the conversion of energy waves into brain signals by the ear, human or animal so NO. If there is no ear to hear, then there is no sound. But that is daft I know that a tree cant fall silently..........

This is of course a question aimed at Philosophy not Physic's but it can mess with your mind if you let it! A quick Google search for the question and you will see philosophers and other academics discussing it throughout the internet. The more you dwell the more you bring in other deep philosophical questions ...

When you close the fridge, does the light really go out ?
Does killing time damage Eternity?
Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard ?
Why is the third hand on a watch called the second hand ?
Can you imagine a world without hypothetical situations ?
Why is abbreviation such a long word?
Why is there only one monopolies commission?

So in conclusion I have left you with so many questions, perhaps you to may spend the next 24 hours pondering the unimportant, just like I have just done ? But to show there are answers to some questions, I leave you with a twist on the opening one. I have worked out the answer to this ...

If a man talks in the forest and his wife is not there to hear him,
is he still wrong?

Ps I took this picture last night while ona walk with Mrs RJR, and neither of us was wrong !

Glastonbury - Beyonce - 2011

I cant say it has ever appealed to me to go to Worthy Farm in Somerset to attend the music festival known to the world as Glastonbury. I'm not a camping kind of guy and I don't fancy sharing 2 porta-loos with 180,000 music fans. Yes I know there are more than 2 toilets, but it's not exactly en-suite is it ? Unless of course you pitch you tent next to the porta-loos, but on second thoughts... Anyway this weekend was the event, fortunately for people like me BBC television has some excellent coverage, just like being there, minus the queues, mud, rain, smell and crowds. Plus you get to see the act not a dot on the horizon.

This years Headline acts were all my type of music.
Friday night was U2, been there done that, seen them in concert. They put on a good show but ... I don't see why some bands feel the need to extent a song by 5mins, with a rambling bit in the middle. The Edge is a great guitar player, but when I'm not stuck in the moment, an unscheduled guitar solo just seems too much.
Saturday was better, Cold Play did an outstanding set playing all their classics, "Clocks" was an excellent track. BUT the show stopper, the girl that has the honour of being the first female headline/closing act was Beyonce on Sunday.

The picture at the start is not from Glastonbury. Mrs RJR took it when she went with Rachel to a Beyonce concert in Manchester a couple of years ago. As you can see they got pretty close. So you can image we quite like Beyonce at "chez RJR"
Her performance on Sunday evening was outstanding, in fact I have just watched it again while doing this weeks ironing pile ! Vocals and stage presence confirm she is a Diva and she had the crowd of 175,00, eating out of her hand. Mrs RJR is a Physiotherapist (physical therapist) and sits mesmerized, occasionally pointing out just how impressive her dancing is "that shouldn't be possible" she can be heard saying !
I mentioned in my 3 songs post a couple of days ago I like "Irreplaceable" so here it is live from Glastonbury

Finally back to why I don't go to Glastonbury..  check out this newspaper article to see what the field in front of the Pyramid stage looks like, when the crowd goes home !!! HERE

Media Mayhem 3 BLOGS

Day three is here already and the challenge is to pick 3 favourite blogs !!

I decided right at the start that I personally wouldn't choose any of the blogs that took part in the challenge this weekend. So that ruled out several blogs that I read on a regular basis. But this is not a general guide line for the challenge

The reason for this was to introduce a further 3 blogs to the mix of weekend participants! They are in no particular order, and are far from the only 3 I follow. I chose them because I visit regularly and consider them a good read and worth a recommend.. I have plenty of others but these seemed to fit the mix.

Click on any of the screen shots to visit...

Description
First up if you fancy something a bit zany (I don't think she will mind that description) is Crystal's a Pistol. Crystal is a fellow Mormon that I came across through the A-Z challenge.

Description
Second is Grumpy Old Ken, wonderful dry humour.  Watch out for his monthly round up of world news, I found Ken when he was featured as a Blog of Note by Blogger.

Description
Third all 3 of my kids blog and "the boy" is the only one not in this weekends Media Mayhem Challenge. So he is the only one I could add under my self inflicted "rules". Jacob only started this blog Teen Fiction Centre a week ago, has already collected 61 followers and secured several guest posts including Published author interviews. It is rapidly becoming the place to be for Teen Fiction Reviews. You can find my other family bloggers on the tab at the top.

And here ends the Media Mayhem challenge, thank you all for taking part. You have all got into the spirit of the event and completed the challenge as set. I hope you have enjoyed thinking about the Songs, Films and Blogs to include as much as I have. Maybe you have also found a new blog to follow or gained a follower or two yourself. If so the weekend was a success.

If you think it has been fun and would like me to organise more themed blog hops, please let me know in the comments. In the meantime, as a token of my thanks, here is a badge/award for you to take if you wish...

Media Mayhem FILMS

Today we are up for 3 films, just like yesterday this is not a list of my all time top 3 films, just films I put in the group "Favourites"

I think if I were to do this post again in a months time, I would end up choosing 3 different films entirely, but right here, right now these are the ones on my mind.

Most Tom Cruise films are based on the same plot : He begins as an overconfident, loud, lady's man. Then he makes some mistakes and is humbled, almost to breaking point. Finally with the help a women who sees his potential, he rebuilds himself as a better man. So I could at this point choose Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Cocktail or numerous others The story is all the same just different props. But the film I am choosing is, Jerry Maguire and I made a classic find on YouTube today. This has to be the best compilation video for the film ever?

If you haven't sung at the top of your voice driving, you haven't lived !!

" You had me at hello"

Movie number 2 is completely different ... Sixth Sense ... Bruce Willis shows he can make it through a film and not strip to his vest. I've chosen this film because it has such a clever twist. As the main character reflects at the end, you realise just how obvious the twist was, but how easily you missed it. Everyone I know that has seen this, seems to have the classic, hairs on your neck tingle effect, in the closing moments.

"I see dead people"

Last film in the set is Its a Wonderful life, its old, its black and white, but its timeless. This gets put on every Christmas and every year the kids moan its old and its black and white, but they always want to watch to the end if they see the beginning. Its a classic tale of looking beyond materialism, valuing family and friends. The message also reminds us we all have a value and purpose.

"Remember, no man is a failure who has friends"

Reading through the posts made by other participants of this weekend, I hope I am right in sensing you have all enjoyed pondering your choices as much as I have. Perhaps you have been brought to remembrance of a song or film you have not thought of for a while? The idea of the weekend was two fold. First to expose a little of yourself to let others get to know you better. Second to give a chance to ponder something you might not normally, even if it was just how to pick 3 from an endless list  ! Enjoy your day...

Media Mayhem SONGS

Day one of the Media Mayhem weekend is to pick 3 favourite songs. They don't have to be THE most favourite songs, because that would be impossible to choose!!

I thought this would be easy, but after getting up to a list of about 20, then finding videos for about 8, I finally decided on 3.

Beyonce Irreplaceable was in the list, I just love the video and her non-nonsense, sort that man attitude.
Sinead O'connor came close with Nothing compares to you for its raw emotion.
Daniel Beddingfield nearly made it with If your not the one because it touches my soul.
The list could  could go on and on...

So what did I pick.
First up is D:ream a 90s classic, "Things can only get better" I saw it on TV yesterday and its just infectious, you can't sing along and not believe its true. No wonder the Labour party decided to use it as a theme for their 1997 election campaign, perhaps its was why they won after 18 years of Conservative governments ?
The bands keyboard player, Brian Cox, also believes in the songs mantra. He went on to become famous as a Particle Physicist who works on the Large Hadron Collider for CERN and has his own TV show "Wonders of the universe"
Professor Brian has managed to make TV astronomy sexy, where Patrick Moore failed, I can't see why ...

So here is Song 1..

Next up has a bit of a star theme too. I would like to think I keep pretty current with my taste in music for a 40 something Dad. (Tinie Tempah nearly made the list) and song two has such clever lyrics..

Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky
Are like shooting stars
I could really use a wish right now
A wish right now...

I cant help but think that some of the current rappers are the 'wordsmiths' or Shakespear's of our day. I also like Hayley Williams voice, she is better known as the lead singer of Paramore who sang Deocode from Twilight

Finally for number 3,  I'm going for a big finish. I am not a massive Robbie Williams fan, but there is something hair raising about his anthem "Angels" especially when recorded live at Knebworth. Reputedly the biggest concert set in UK history, Robbie performed a solo concert to 375,000 people over 3 nights. No wonder the crowd of approximately 125,000 in the video can sound so loud.

I could go on with loads of songs but that's not the plan ! I'm off now to visit the other songs in the blog hop. We have just a nice number of participants making it possible to check out them all ! The list is below and if you want to join in at the last minute its not too late ...

Media Mayhem 3 day Blog Hop

Welcome to the RJR Daydreamer "Media Mayhem" Blog hop !!

Description

What... A 3 day, weekend blog hop.
Why... Well I enjoyed taking part in the A-Z April challenge so much that I felt I wanted to do something similar, but shorter.
When... 25th 26th and 27th of June, thats Saturday to Monday.
Theme... Rather than just hopping to random blogs, I thought it would be good if the three days could each have a theme, relating to media.

Saturday - Songs
Post about 3 songs you like, they may or may not be your favourite. Blog how you want, include Youtube clips, or written lyrics, its your blog you choose the style, but tell us why you chose them and let your creative side be free !

Sunday - Films
Post about 3 films you like, again you choose how to present, but the idea is to to let us know why so we can get to know you a little better.

Monday - Blogs
Here is a chance to share something about 3 blogs you follow and why, it may be one that you have found on Saturday or Sunday, or one you have followed for a while.

Some Etiquette guidelines
Add just one link to your blog, not to a specific post so for example mine would be

http://www.rjrdaydreamer.blogspot.com

Please create a post between now and Friday to let people know you are taking part, linking to this page. That way we will get more participants and increase the fun for everyone.

In blue is the code for the badge above, copy and paste into the HTML tab of a post, or in a HTML gadget. If you don't like the size alter the values of height and width from 200

<a href="http://rjrdaydreamer.blogspot.com/p/media-mayhem-hop.html" target="_blank" title="Media Mayhem"><img alt="Description" border="0" height="200" src="http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w295/johntealon30/RJRdaydreamer/linkylistfun.jpg" width="200" /></a>

Please don't enter a link just to advertise with no intention of taking part it frustrates genuine participants.
Its a family show, so perhaps you may need to give some thought to which of your favourites are appropriate.
This is the first hop I have organised, so be tolerant I'm learning ;)
As this post disapears down the page you will be able to get to it via the badge at the top right of the sidebar.

Teen Fiction Centre

The 'J' from RJR, variously known as Jacob or "The boy" has decided he had started on the wrong foot with the blogosphere. His original blog was to be random thoughts, but he never really got very far with it. Now after a week of playing with templates and "looks" he has created a very elegant NEW blog, which draws on his great love of books. He has read hundreds of them and with this knowledge has decided to review them for fun and others benefit.

Have a look if you get some time Teen Fiction Centre

Whit Friday 2011

"Whit Friday, meaning White Friday, is the name given to the first Friday after Pentecost or Whitsun (White Sunday). The day has a cultural significance in northern England, as the date on which the annual Whit Walks are traditionally held. By convention, the Whit Walks coincide with Brass band contests, held in Saddleworth, Tameside and other outlying areas of Greater Manchester." source

Or in other words a "reet good nite out".  It has become a family tradition that we attend the band contests in the village of my "in-laws" Greenfield. Greenfield being one of the several villages in Saddleworth. Each of the others with wonderful names such as Diggle, Delph and Dobcross all hold their own, but I doubt they are as good ! So since I have known Mrs RJR I have sat at the side of the road and watched the bands. I reckon this is 20 something years now.

How it works... Bands from all around the North, sometimes from other parts of the country and even other nations, do lots of practice, then hire a coach. On Whit Friday the villages hold contests and offer prize money. The bands drive around as many villages as they can fit in and enter as many competitions as possible. A good band with a good driver can fit in 8 or more villages between the opening at 4pm and closing at around 11pm. Along with the bands come thousands of visitors who boost the village economy ! Copious amounts of burgers chips and beer are bought and consumed.

Now despite all my years experience I'm not a brass band expert, I just go for the family fun. You will notice that things are little casual, not much in the way of crowd control. When you have younger sibling-in-laws or children of your own, you spend most of the night marching down the road with them (its not physically possible to walk you subconsciously start to march)

The walk down the closed street, is followed by the band playing a set piece in the village park, which is judged by a team of "village experts" who sit in a caravan with the curtains closed, so as not to be influenced by appearance. (A little strange to be fair)

Of course this all makes a little more sense when seen, rather than talked about so just for you this year I spent  the evening with a camera !! Of course all the family knew why ... "is this for today's blog" was the oft asked question.

I haven't added captions to embarrass but several family members will spot themselves including Mrs RJR who with her sister and friend couldn't help having a march !! The bands vary from those who take it very seriously to those who are quite a novelty act, you choose which are which !!!

Admission is free so you get a full evenings fun, 60+ bands, all for the cost of a bag of chips, a burger, several bottles of pop, a bag of candy floss, chocolate, a pot of olives... You get the picture, I have three kids so my hand was in my pocket all night !
So here with no further waffle, but apologies for the sound quality, I present some of the bands from Greenfield 2011...

The clip that got away...

Fitting it all in...

I had the chance to teach the adult Sunday school class at church today as the regular teacher is away for 3 weeks.

The lesson was taken from Matthew 25 which contains 3 parables, The 10 Virgins, The Talents and The sheep and goats.

As I was preparing it struck me that each of these parables encourage us to "raise the bar" and become better people. I was also very mindful that often when we go to such lessons, we can come away feeling inadequate, that there is just too much to do without doing more. So I determined to start with an object lesson to remind that we can always do a little more.

In a modern life, no matter what our faith is, the feeling of being overwhelmed is a common one so here is my take on it...

Consider our life as being a glass which we can fill with whatever we choose. Without a plan, we tend to just fill it with things that may not be the most important to us, represented in this case as sand.

Regardless of whether you are a glass half full or half empty type of person, the glass does have a limited volume, thus when we try to fit big things in, problems arise. Those big things, represented by the pebbles could be work, study, family, a church responsibility or simple things like prayer.

As can be seen above the glass (our lives) become just too full, with no room for anything else and we feel something has to give. So we begin to throw things, often in a last in, last out order. But there is a better way. Its initially harder, but has far better results. Sometimes we have to stop, re-evaluate and  restart with a better plan. The best plan is to fit in the biggest most important things first.

Amazingly if we do this, we can actually fit more in. When the sand is added back it all fits, in fact even leaving space. A little thought and you see that the sand going in last, fills all the tiny spaces and gaps. So it is with life, things that are not important can be fitted in around those that are if they are started in the right order.

A word of warning though, if we pull out one of those big items, the sand will fill its space instantly, this makes fitting it back in again a problem.
Likewise if we choose in life to drop a good activity or habit, it is a fresh struggle to fit it back in

There is no reason to despair though, at any point we can stop, re-evaluate and  restart with a better plan. In reality the challenge is not fitting everything into a busy life. The real challenge is having the desire to...

Stop , re-evaluate and  restart with a better plan.

To find happiness we need a reason or a push to do this re-evaluation, it can be come in many forms, a change of circumstances, a suggestion from a friend or even reading a blog ?
For me its all of the above but attending church each week and listening to lessons that encourage me to do more and improve are also a reason to ...

Stop , re-evaluate and  restart with a better plan.

Trooping the Colour

Today is the "Official" Birthday of Her Majesty the Queen. Which is not to say it is her actual birthday which is on the 21st of April

The "Official" birthday of the Monarch is celebrated on the 1st 2nd or sometimes the 3rd Saturday on June ever since Edward VII decided he would like a bit better weather for his special day.

Of course being British we couldn't let the day go without some Pomp and Ceremony and as such it is the day of the Queens Birthday Parade, also known as Trooping the Colour.

Although very much a ceremonial event it does have practical origins. Back in the day of poor communications the rallying point on the field of battle for each regiment would be around its flag, or "colours" To ensure each soldier knew his own regiments colours, during parade each day the flag would be "trooped" in front of them. The colours would also be trooped before and after a battle to show to the Regiment that the Ensign was in tact, along with their honour.

Things have changed somewhat since then and most military leaders see the benefit of being a little less conspicuous, wearing a bright red tunic in a wide open sandy environment is perhaps not the brightest of things to do ! It reminds me of a classic Far Side cartoon image...

But I digress, the Trooping of the colour is an elaborate event, full of all those traditions and history we as Brits do so well. Its worth remembering as well that the army doesn't have troops that just do the ceremonial duties, these guys have probably recently been or a due to rotate onto active service. The video I came up with gives a pretty good insight into the event ...

Cant keep up !

I have just spent the last hour redesigning the Family Bloggers page.
If you have visited it before, you will remember it was formatted as family members pictures, placed on a sectioned Oak tree. Well it looked okay but every time another family member started blogging, I had to redo the tree !!! So I have given up and gone for simple click-able pictures of just the person. The reason the redesign was needed... Rachel has started a blog !

To save you the trouble of going to look here it is ...

Soldier and sacrifice

At school I never really enjoyed English lessons, in particular I really disliked  English Literature. I don't now why, as in general learning came easy and I did well at most subjects. Perhaps the thoughts of reading Shakespeare was just too much of a turn off ?

But one piece of  work my English teacher shared has stuck with me ever since and I was reminded of it when I saw a copy pinned on the wall during last weeks visit to the "Secret Bunker"

I grew up like most Brits within the shadow of a "war" in Northern Ireland, which for the most part was a TV news item, but on occasions effected us on the main land by way of Terrorist Bombings. At about age 6 I remember being evacuated with my parents from a shopping centre because of a bomb threat,  I also recall that the BBC had specific reporting restrictions that prevented them broadcasting the voice of anyone connected to the IRA. Instead they would show them with an Irish actors voice dubbed over, but saying the same words (strange) Things have moved on, Jerry Adams the once leader of the Political arm of the IRA is now an elected MP. I also remember the massive explosion at a Brighton Hotel when the Conservative leadership were holding their annual conference. So amidst this background, as an impressionable schoolboy I was presented wit the words penned by Harvey Andrews about the true story of a British Soldier Michael Willets on the streets of Northern Ireland.

In a station in the city a British soldier stood
Talking to the people there if the people would
Some just stared in hatred, and others turned in pain
And the lonely British soldier wished he was back home again

Come join the British Army! said the posters in his town
See the world and have your fun come serve before the Crown
The jobs were hard to come by and he could not face the dole
So he took his country's shilling and enlisted on the roll

For there was no fear of fighting, the Empire long was lost
Just ten years in the army getting paid for being bossed
Then leave a man experienced a man who's made the grade
A medal and a pension some mem'ries and a trade

Then came the call to Ireland as the call had come before
Another bloody chapter in an endless civil war
The priests they stood on both sides the priests they stood behind
Another fight in Jesus name the blind against the blind

The soldier stood between them between the whistling stones
And then the broken bottles that led to broken bones
The petrol bombs that burnt his hands the nails that pierced his skin
And wished that he had stayed at home surrounded by his kin

The station filled with people the soldier soon was bored
But better in the station than where the people warred
The room filled up with mothers with daughters and with sons
Who stared with itchy fingers at the soldier and his gun

A yell of fear a screech of brakes the shattering of glass
The window of the station broke to let the package pass
A scream came from the mothers as they ran towards the door
Dragging children crying from the bomb upon the floor

The soldier stood and could not move his gun he could not use
He knew the bomb had seconds and not minutes on the fuse
He could not run to pick it up and throw it in the street
There were far too many people there too many running feet

Take cover! yelled the soldier, Take cover for your lives
And the Irishmen threw down their young and stood before their wives
They turned towards the soldier their eyes alive with fear
For God's sake save our children or they'll end their short lives here

The soldier moved towards the bomb his stomach like a stone
Why was this his battle God why was he alone
He lay down on the package and he murmured one farewell
To those at home in England to those he loved so well

He saw the sights of summer felt the wind upon his brow
The young girls in the city parks how precious were they now
The soaring of the swallow the beauty of the swan
The music of the turning world so soon would it be gone

A muffled soft explosion and the room began to quake
The soldier blown across the floor his blood a crimson lake
They never heard him cry or shout they never heard him moan
And they turned their children's faces from the blood and from the bones

The crowd outside soon gathered and the ambulances came
To carry off the body of a pawn lost in the game
And the crowd they clapped and cheered and they sang their rebel songs
One soldier less to interfere where he did not belong

But will the children growing up learn at their mothers' knees
The story of the soldier who bought their liberty
Who used his youthful body as a means towards an end
Who gave his life to those who called him murderer not friend

What struck me was not the loss of life but the last paragraph, the futility of a life lost, that makes no effect on those saved. The event in 1971 was not an all changing one in many peoples lives, "The troubles" continued for some time, in fact as those of us that live in Manchester will testify 1996 proved the hostilities to be far from over when the IRA sent a coded warning of a Bomb in our city centre, the area was evacuated but the explosion destroyed the heart of our city

I heard the explosion in our home about 7 miles away, my in-laws were in a department store in the centre of town that had all its windows blown in, but it could have been worse.

The sad thing, when all the destruction and deaths end, it always comes to the same result, men sitting around a table and sorting out there differences. Its true when they say "war is young men dying and old men talking "

Would you like to know a secret ?

This may be one of the most unusual tourist signs you may come across as you drive around the East coast of Scotland. A secret posted on a sign becomes somewhat of a non secret, but that's what happens at the end of a long a protracted Cold War.

If you follow the signs you come to some more, that give away greater  information..

and then you come to a rather innocent looking farm house...

innocent except you cant help noticing all the windows have steel shutters that can be closed over "if required"

Enough of the spooks and dramatics.. Today we went to one of Scotland's more unusual tourist attractions. Formerly a nuclear survival bunker for the Scottish Government, it is now privately owned, presumably no longer required now the Cold War is over ? To be fair it is a little more touristy and obvious than the previous picture suggests. The collection of vehicles around the car park would make it stand out on a satellite picture now, but they do add a little more for the paying public to take pictures of.

But what about the bunker I hear you ask? Well in true spy style you enter via the farm house, but unlike James Bond we had to pay for a family ticket and go through a turn style, then down one flight of stairs to a very long tunnel that slopes downwards..

The information pack informs you that the tunnel is made of concrete 18" thick and it leads down to a large set of steel blast doors that weigh 1.5 tons and a pair of 90degree turns to further reduce the effect of any explosion.

Once inside its hard to tell your underground except the air smells a little musty, other than that it has the look of any government building or perhaps an old hospital. There are two floors each the size of a football pitch and it is all encased in 9 feet of concrete extending to a depth of 90 feet.
A lot of original "equipment" is on display from both its original use in the 50s and 60s as a secret observation post, to its later use as the emergency seat of Scottish Politics from 68 to 93.

From top left, Power room, Telephony switch board, Radar Room, Operations room.

There were things to play with too, which Rachel in particular liked.

 Wearing a Wok ?

New laptop ?

Hello Bunker Pizza, can I take your order please?

Dad there's a weird girl on the phone selling Pizza's !

On the whole I think this next picture shows the boy and I would rather take a direct strike than live down here long term.

Whereas Mrs RJR was quite happy once she realised that despite having no phone signal, thanks to the wonders of a wi-fi transmitter in the underground mess room come cafe, she could get Facebook !

All in all an informative and fun morning out. The big question is, do they have a new Bunker ?
I guess that would be a real SECRET !
